A team of ten Year 5 and 6 children from Millbrook Primary School in Grove competed against other Oxfordshire primary schools at the iconic Iffley Road Stadium earlier this week. They were taking part in the Chairman’s Cup Mixed Seven-a-Side Tag Rugby Tournament and ended up lifting the trophy as overall winners.
The Millbrook team went through to contest the final after winning several local rounds and practising hard in preparation. King Alfred’s PE teacher, Chris Dowling, spent several months coaching the team as part of King Alfred’s work supporting high quality PE in local Vale Academy Trust primary schools. Toby Christensen, a parent of one of the players, also helped coach the children on the day.
Jane Ratcliffe, Millbrook’s Headteacher, said “I couldn’t be prouder of them all. Both on and off the pitch they modelled so many of Millbrook’s school values. They waited with exemplary patience for their turn on the field and each played their part – I have never seen such teamwork! They kept going, even when the run of play seemed to be going against them. To come out overall winners is brilliant.”
