On the evening of 24 April, nine teams of Year 6 pupils from Vale Academy Trust primary schools competed in ‘Minispeaks’ – a ‘shadow’ public speaking contest based on Rotary International’s popular national ‘Youthspeaks’ Competition.
Pupils in each team took on the roles of Chair, Main Speaker, and Vote of Thanks. The winning team (pictured) was from St James CE Primary School, Hanney who retained the trophy for the second year running.
The three pupils on the winning team offered the following comments:
Alice Cox said “It was a ‘one of a kind’ experience and I wouldn’t want it to have gone any other way. It was hard work but worth it.”
Beau Skinner added: “I couldn’t believe it when our name was called. It was definitely worth it, we worked really hard at school and at home.”
Isabelle Ewart summed up by saying: “It was very nerve wracking but an incredible experience.”
Kate Wigley, English Specialist who works across the Trust’s schools, organised the competition. Kate said: “Once again, this year standards across the board were high and St James knew they would have to go ‘all out’ to retain the trophy. The fact that they are winners for the second year running is testament to the hard hours they put in practising. All the contestants did well in the challenging art of public speaking – a useful skill that is never too soon to learn.”

Alice, Beau and Isabelle Ewart compiled the following report about their ‘Minispeaks’ experience.
“We have been very lucky to be picked as the winners of Mini Speaks 2018.
Firstly, it all started with watching the Youth Speaks. Our teacher asked if we would be interested in competing. Soon enough we were heading off to KA’s for a master class with a knowledgeable teacher. We were given advice on how to present and prepare our speeches. It very quickly became obvious that this was not going to be easy!
After an unsure start, we began to get the hang of it. In the afternoons we’d leave class and type, edit and improve our speeches. After 1 week of typing up our presentation, we began writing our speech on cards. This was difficult, as writing is much harder and more tiring than typing!!!!
In next to no time at all, we were in the KA’s Centre Site cafeteria. We had been picked to present our speech last, it was a long wait. We enjoyed listening to the other fantastic speeches and it certainly got us thinking about their topics. When it finally came to our speech, we were totally shaking, we had to hold our hands together to stop them shaking.
As the judges were deliberating, we grabbed some refreshments and continued to shake. Afterwards, we all sat back in our seats and the judges gave feedback to every team. Not long after, the winners were about to be announced. We were restless. When our team was called up, we were all in utter shock. WE WON!!”
