Last Wednesday (14 June) saw the first ever Vale Academy Trust Primary Sports Awards Event held in The Beacon in Wantage. A total of 75 Awards were presented to girls and boys from the Trust’s five local primary schools by Thinus Delport. Thinus is a Rugby Union wing and fullback who formerly played for Gloucester, the Worcester Warriors and the South African national team.
The event was attended by parents, Vale Academy Trust Directors, governors, staff and Headteachers. All agreed it was a truly inspirational evening and a real tribute to the achievements of the youngsters. All the children attending had excelled in their various disciplines and other important aspects of PE and Sport, such as leading and inspiring their peers.
The event was fronted by three Year 6 pupils; Emily Winter from Wantage CE Primary; Isabel Andersen from Millbrook School and Alice Hoddinott from St James who were presenters for the evening. They spoke from the stage to the assembled audience of over 300 people with great confidence, poise and clarity.
Isabel commented: “The more the crowd grew, the more my nerves grew. As I started to speak, I had a sigh of relief. It wasn’t as bad as I had expected! I became comfortable speaking and I enjoyed it.”
Chris Webb, parent of Oliver Webb (St James) who received the overall award for Tennis said: “An event like this gives parents confidence that the Trust is committed to the development of our children so that they can aim to be the best that they can possibly be in whatever it is they want to do”.
Paul Chadwick, the Vale Academy Trust’s Primary PE Specialist and chief organiser of the event said: “It was a wonderful celebration of the work done in Primary Physical Education by the staff and children within the Trust’s schools. Our three young presenters were brilliant, Thinus was an inspiring special guest and we have some future stars in the children that received the awards.”
“This was a night that I hope will stick in the minds of the children and their parents for a long time to come.”
A selection of photos from the evening appear below. Congratulations to all the award winners across all the primary schools.
