Forty pupils from Vale Academy Trust Primary Schools took part in a recent “Blue Peter Book Awards” shadowing project, alongside twenty-five students from King Alfred’s. The high point of the shadowing process this year was a trip to the Story Museum in Oxford. Six Year 8 young leaders from King Alfred’s were also recognised for leading small group discussions on each of the short-listed books, encouraging the younger pupils to share their opinions. Unfortunately, the live viewing of Blue Peter (where the winning books were announced) was not able to go ahead due to the snow, but overall all the pupils involved hugely enjoyed the experience – and are already looking forward to being involved again next year.
The Vale Academy Trust is also organising “Mini Speaks” – a public speaking competition for primary pupils – for the third year running taking place on Tuesday 24 April. Teams of three children from each of the schools’ Year 6 classes are busy preparing. St James CE Primary are hoping to retain the trophy, but the standard of ideas and engagement witnessed so far at the preparatory masterclass is very high, so they will have a challenge on their hands! Family members, staff and governors are expected to attend to lend their support to the competing teams.
